Prema Mahalingam had two missions when founding Aaria Creations: To transform Indian traditional wear into modern Fusion wear for toddlers with comfort being the priority; and, through her book shop, to help keep Tamil, one of Singapore’s four official languages, a living language among young Singaporeans.
After 30 years in the broadcasting industry, Prema saw an opportunity in the market for Indian fusion designed clothes for toddlers that are comfortable in the hot and humid Singapore weather. She started to create her own designs, and in 2017 she decided to make her dream a reality and set up her own shop in Little India. She has continued to design toddler clothes, and has also expanded into ladies and men's fashion.
Prema is also passionate about keeping Tamil, one of Singapore’s four official languages, a living language for the years to come. In 2017, she took over one of the last remaining Tamil bookshops in Singapore, and is now one of the main suppliers of Tamil literature – fiction/non-fiction, assessment books, poetry – in the country. Being an author herself, she also organises writers’ workshops and book clubs for ASTW (Association of Singapore Tamil Writers) in order to support the younger generations to keep Tamil a living part of Singapore’s unique multilingual tapestry.
Aaria Creations was paired with AstraZeneca in The Advocate.
